How can the local supply of fresh produce and livestock products to school canteens in Benin be strengthened? The MALDUCS project, funded by the IDRC, addresses this question by developing sustainable local supply models tailored to local conditions.

Following several months of research and field studies, the project partners came together for a validation workshop to share the results of the studies, compare their analyses and jointly validate the supply models that had been developed. This meeting will enable preparations to be made for the next stage of the project: the trialling of these models in the five pilot school canteens in Benin.

Bringing together teams from Ucoopia Benin, researchers from the Laboratory for Research on Innovation for Agricultural Development (L-RIDA) at the University of Parakou, and the management teams of the pilot schools, the workshop facilitated dialogue between the various stakeholders with a view to developing solutions that meet the needs of the schools, local farmers and the local communities.

The pilot scheme will assess the relevance, feasibility and impact of the models developed, with a view to promoting more sustainable local sourcing for school canteens, local producers, and food safety and security.
