Civic
education

We support students in higher education institutions and university communities in developing a critical and systemic view of global issues and the various power relations that permeate our societies, particularly racism, sexism, and climate inequality, in order to strengthen their capacity for action towards a fair and sustainable world.

We also build bridges between the student communities at our institutions and those in our partner countries. For example, a project developed by UCAD students saw the creation of vegetable gardens in three primary schools in Mbour, Senegal, with the participation of ULB students. Citoyen·nes de demain brought together Belgian, Beninese, and Senegalese students to discuss issues of food sovereignty.

Citoyen·ne de Demain (Citizen of Tomorrow), an exchange project between students from Benin, Senegal, and Belgium on food sovereignty

Conducted in particular with the Uni4Coop Consortium, our work in Global and Solidarity Citizenship Education (ECMS) is based on the following strategies:

  • Integrating ECMS methodologies and content into and outside of curricula: through the organization of training sessions, conferences, events, film screenings and discussions on topics related to global interdependencies, sustainable food systems, human rights, etc.
  • Strengthening the methodological and thematic capacities of members of academic communities and supporting mobilization and action, for example by supporting student groups wishing to implement awareness-raising or mobilization initiatives.
  • Consultation and networking between the various stakeholders in the academic community and their networking with other actors (civil society, partners in countries cooperating with Belgium, international actors, etc.).
  • Advocacy towards academic authorities helps to reinforce the areas mentioned above and to work towards a more sustainable and inclusive society by working within the university, in particular through support for the hospital university motion at ULiège and ULB and service learning (ULiège, ULB, UMons), or intercultural training for students and professors with the Pôle Académique de Namur (PAN). We are also strengthening the integration of the theme of food sovereignty into the university curricula of various faculties with DJESA or the sustainable food system portfolio (SAD).
