As part of my Bachelor’s degree in Business and Development, I undertook a work placement at Ucoopia with the aim of gaining first-hand insight into how a development cooperation NGO operates and gaining a better understanding of how projects are implemented on the ground. With a particular interest in issues relating to climate change, the sustainable management of natural resources and supporting local communities, I also wanted to develop my research and analytical skills in an intercultural context.

During my work placement, I contributed to the Niowan Saloum project, which focuses on the losses and damage caused by climate change in the Saloum Delta in Senegal. I first helped organise a scientific symposium on the impacts of climate change on West African coastlines, before taking part in various stages of a research project: a literature review; preparing and conducting interviews with local communities, NGOs, protected area managers and institutions; collecting data in the field; analysing the results; and writing my final-year dissertation.

The most memorable experience was undoubtedly the fieldwork in Senegal. Interacting with local communities gave me a better understanding of the realities they face as a result of climate change and brought a concrete, human dimension to the concepts I had studied in my academic work. This immersive experience was particularly enriching and strengthened my interest in issues of climate justice and sustainable development.

Beyond the tasks I carried out, what stands out most for me is the quality of the support I received, the trust placed in me by the team, and the fruitful exchanges with the various project partners. This placement enabled me to discover the realities of the development cooperation sector, to develop new research and analytical skills, and also to confirm my desire to pursue a career in the fields of development, international cooperation and environmental and social issues. It was an educational and inspiring experience that will remain a significant milestone in my academic and professional journey.
