Project for the production of organic soil improvers and fertilisers in rural and peri-urban areas of Senegal
This project aims to develop an inclusive value chain centred on local organic soil improvers and fertilisers in Senegal, whilst supporting rural entrepreneurship that can help young men and women to remain in their local areas.

Background
In Senegal’s southern groundnut-growing region, intensive farming practices associated with groundnut and cotton cultivation have gradually degraded soil structure, leading to a loss of fertility. This situation has resulted in a steady decline in productivity on family farms.
In this context, the increased use of organic fertilisers appears essential for improving and maintaining agricultural productivity. However, the recent rise in the price of synthetic fertilisers has also led to an increase in the cost of organic fertilisers, thereby reducing the capacity of small-scale farms to take action.
Given the complexity of these challenges, it is essential to promote an agroecological approach in order to restore soil fertility in the Southern Peanut-growing Basin in a sustainable manner.
Location
The regions of Kaffrine (the departments of Kaffrine, Mbirkilane, Malem Hodar and Koungheul) and Tambacounda (the departments of Tambacounda and Koumpentoum).
Objective
This project aims to produce organic soil improvers and fertilisers in rural and peri-urban areas to increase the availability of high-quality compost close to production plots.

Expected impacts
The aim of the project is to increase the availability of high-quality organic soil improvers and fertilisers near agricultural plots by 4,800 tonnes.
Beneficiaries
36 project leaders selected from among young agricultural entrepreneurs, economic interest groups (EIGs) or cooperatives, as well as other public or private initiatives supporting agricultural entrepreneurship.
Activities
To achieve its objectives, the project plans to:
- To support inclusive and participatory initiatives aimed at developing the organic fertiliser sector. The project will organise production units into cooperatives, with a participatory quality assurance system to ensure quality and traceability. Business support will strengthen their access to local markets and partnerships. Finally, institutional collaborations and networking will promote the sector’s recognition and long-term sustainability.
- Set up, equip and oversee the operation of 12 production units for soil improvers and organic fertilisers, two of which are located in peri-urban areas.
- To strengthen the technical and organisational capacities of 36 project leaders by developing viable economic and social models. Each project leader will receive personalised support to structure their business model and draw up a sustainable business plan. Group training sessions and personalised support will enhance their skills in management, marketing and organisation, whilst practical training and real-world testing will help to optimise production techniques. Finally, coaching and mentoring will support the development and long-term viability of their businesses.
