Background

In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, access to quality healthcare remains a major challenge, particularly for the most vulnerable groups such as women, children and people displaced by conflict. In recent years, several projects funded by the European Union have helped to improve the quality of care, strengthen healthcare facilities and make healthcare services more affordable.

However, this funding is gradually coming to an end. It is therefore essential to ensure a structured transition in order to guarantee the continuity and sustainability of health services. This project forms part of this transition phase: it aims to consolidate the progress made, strengthen the capacities of local stakeholders and support a gradual handover to national institutions and communities.

Objectives

The overall aim of the project is to improve the health and well-being of the population of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The project’s Specific Objectives (SO) are:

OS1: To ensure sustained access to healthcare for the Congolese population, particularly for women, children and internally displaced persons  

OS2: Strengthen the management and governance of the health system and support health system reforms

Project activities

In collaboration with local communities, healthcare professionals and public authorities, a number of complementary activities are planned:

  • To support access to healthcare by maintaining funding mechanisms that enable people to continue receiving treatment at an affordable cost.
  • Strengthen local social protection systems in the health sector, in particular by supporting community-based membership schemes
  • Improving the quality of care through training for healthcare staff, technical support and the provision of equipment
  • Strengthen the management of healthcare facilities and improve their organisation
  • Supporting local and national authorities in strengthening the health system
  • To build on experience and share best practice so that it can be applied on a wider scale
  • To raise public awareness of health issues, particularly maternal and child health and nutrition
