West Africa Sustainable Ocean Program (WASOP)

The WASOP program aims to improve the sustainable and integrated use of ocean resources in West Africa while stimulating inclusive economic growth and covers 13 coastal countries in West Africa.

Background

West Africa’s marine and coastal ecosystems play an important role in biodiversity, food security, and the livelihoods of millions of people. However, these areas are undergoing rapid degradation due to the combined effects of climate change, coastal erosion, overexploitation of natural resources, unplanned urbanization, and insufficiently integrated governance.

To address these challenges, the West Africa Sustainable Ocean Program (WASOP) has been set up, bringing together a wide range of stakeholders. The program aims to improve the sustainable and integrated use of ocean resources in West Africa while stimulating inclusive economic growth, and covers 13 coastal countries in West Africa. Our action

The Sustainable Ocean Program in West Africa is structured around three complementary pillars:

  • Pillar 1: Strengthening ocean governance in West Africa;
  • Pillar 2: Supporting an innovative and sustainable blue economy;
  • Pillar 3: Strengthen marine and coastal resilience.

Eclosio focused on implementing product 1.1 of pillar 3, dedicated to strengthening scientific knowledge of coastal ecosystems. To achieve this, Eclosio’s action revolves around awarding master’s, doctoral, and research grants, setting up a West African scientific committee, organizing meetings and training courses for young researchers, and supporting cooperation between the various actors involved in coastal areas in West Africa (Collectif 5 Deltas, Collectif des Deltas du Golfe du Bénin). These initiatives will improve the management of marine protected areas and strengthen the resilience of coastal communities through shared knowledge.
