DJESA: raising awareness about food sovereignty
Half-day discussions on food sovereignty, organized by the Uni4Coop consortium at various French-speaking campuses in Belgium.
By combining cultural events (theater, film, dance, etc.) with in-depth workshops in small groups led by experts in the field or from the voluntary sector, DJESA helps students from all backgrounds to better understand current food systems so that they can envisage alternative models for the future! Whether they are studying political science, bioengineering, veterinary science, etc., they have the opportunity to step outside the academic framework, debate, adopt new perspectives, and imagine alternatives to address issues such as access to land, globalization, and agricultural policies in order to support the development of healthy, humane, and sustainable agriculture.
The Uni4Coop consortium is made up of the university NGOs Ucoopia, Louvain Coopération, and Fucid.
DJESA is also the little brother of Jagros, a project led by Humundi, VSF, and formerly Ucoopia (formerly Eclosio), which offers a similar activity aimed at agricultural colleges in Wallonia.

Play “Feeding humanity is a profession – ACT II” presented to students during DJESA in Namur
Are you a university professor and would like to organize this activity as part of your course?
DJESA adapts to all faculties and disciplines in order to address food sovereignty issues and opportunities for student engagement/involvement through their studies or future careers. The half-day consists of:
- A general introduction to the concept through a cultural event (play, gestural conference, etc.). In 2022 and 2023, this was the play “Feeding Humanity – Act II.”
- Two hours of workshops in small groups on topics related to the concept of food sovereignty: access to land, the influence of multinational corporations, globalization of trade and international commerce, agricultural alternatives, access to food: social assistance and food aid, etc. The content and types of workshops can be adapted to suit the students’ courses and numbers.
